Documentation-based guide

Based on upstream documentation. These steps have not been independently tested in the desktop app; menu labels and behavior may differ by release.

Step by step

  1. Start with the job

List the file formats, layer types and final deliverable you need. A drawing program, RAW developer and layered photo editor solve different problems.

  2. Raster editing: GIMP

GIMP is a free, open-source desktop image editor for Linux, Windows and macOS. Explore it for photo manipulation and compositing; test your actual PSD rather than assuming identical exchange.

  3. Digital painting: Krita

Krita focuses on painting with brushes, layers, drawing assistance and animation tools. It is an open-source option when painting is the central task.

  4. RAW development: darktable

darktable is an open-source photography workflow and RAW developer. Consider it for developing camera images and managing a photography workflow, not as proof of Photoshop-style PSD round trips.

  5. Browser editing: Photopea or PhotoCraft

Photopea offers a browser image editor. Our online route hosts the official PhotoCraft web release. Try the same small sample in both and compare the export you need. Check each service’s terms and privacy separately.

  6. Verify the handoff

Before switching, open the final file in the receiving app, inspect fonts and layers, and compare color and appearance. Keep your current working setup until the task passes.
